Let’s have some pop culture  trickery fun with this creation from Brad Neely and the old fave, Harry Pothead.

Once you have downloaded both Wizard People discs, convert each mp3 into an audio CD. Label the CDs discs 1 and 2. Get a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (aka Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in Europe), preferably on DVD. Insert Wizard People disc 1 into a CD player. Push PLAY then PAUSE so that disc 1 will have no delays when the PLAY button is pushed again. Make sure that the counter reads all zeros.

For DVD (preferable) – After the main menu on the DVD appears, click PLAY on DVD AND CD simultaneously. The audio is told in chapters that correspond exactly to the scenes of the DVD. If you need to stop the DVD, you can queue it back up by pressing play at the point where the Wizard People narrator begans to speak that chapter number. For disc two, start the DVD paused on the beginning of Chapter 19 (19 1:13:44 on the DVD counter).

Count Bass D – MPC Freestyle Session

Another awesome free set from Count Bass D, this time courtesy of the heads in the know over at Dublab.

“Legendary beat producer Count Bass D was visiting Los Angeles recently and came out to the Secondhand Sureshots premiere screening. He was so inspired by the creative music experiment on screen that he raced home and made several new beats on a borrowed MPC by sampling dollar bin wax he bought while in town. The very next day he cruised to dublab and played the tunes live pad hit by pad hit by pad hit on the beat machine. He also sampled some records on the spot and rocked some instantaneous magic. Once a beat sequence would get rolling he jumped around the studio enthusiastically spazzing out to the amazing sounds he created. All we can say is wow!!!”

Glassbreaks – Philip Glass vs Hip Hop

Bob Cronin, aka dj BC, is best known as the creator of such memorable mash-ups as The Beastles (Beatles vs. Beastie Boys) and Wu Orleans (Wu-Tang Clan vs. New Orleans Jazz). Boston Phoenix magazine declared him Boston’s Best Lawbreaker, and his progressive attitude towards copyrights might also be responsible for the fact that his mixes usually disappear from his website after a relatively short time. One of my all-time dj BC favorites is his album Glassbreaks, mashing up Philip Glass with hip-hop. Here it is, for free download, and hopefully for a longer time.

01 Einstein on The Beast [PG - various pieces from Einstein on The Beach vs. The Beastie Boys - Pass The Mic]
02 For The Glasty [PG - Dance V vs. Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes - For The Nasty]
03 How Many Whores? [PG and Foday Muso Susa - Warda's Whorehouse vs. The Fugees - How many Mics?]
04 Lil’ Tut [PG - "Funeral" from Akhnaten vs. Lil' Jon & the Eastside Boyz - I Don't Give A Fuck]
05 Crystal Glass [PG - Dance II vs. Smif n Wessun feat. Talib Kweli - Crystal Stair]
06 Gangsta Rubric [PG - Glasspiece #1: Rubric vs. MC Eight feat. CMW - Geez Make The World Go Round]
07 Evening High [PG - Evening Song vs. Kanye West feat. Talib Kweli and Common - Get 'Em High]
08 Stand Up Dance [PG - Dance I vs. Dizzee Rascal - Stand Up Tall]
09 Leila Dies, Lyrics Born [PG - Leila Dies vs. Lyrics Born - Callin' Out]
10 Glass Prison (Instrumental) [PG - Act III Scene 1: Trial/ Prison from Einstein On The Beach]

The Cool & Strange Thrift Store MP3 Project

A slow Wednesday at the Meat Factory calls for some mid-week madness from the irrepressible Otis Fodder (365 Days Project) and Dana Countryman. Take it away Dana…..

“From the years 1996-2003 I published a magazine called COOL AND STRANGE MUSIC MAGAZINE. We concentrated on featuring oddball musicians, from over the past 6 decades. A record label approached me with the idea of compiling a CD compilation that would feature obscure artists, doing mostly original songs that (hopefully) would have never been copyrighted.

Otis Fodder hosted a weekly internet radio show at that time, called FRIENDLY PERSUASION, also specializing in unusual and crazy music. We worked up a partnership, where the magazine sponsored the show, with regular advertising in the magazine and on our web page. Otis was the perfect guy to compile this “Thrift Shop Music Compilation” with, so we paired up, to co-produce it. The idea was that it would feature only obscure artists, whose work you might (only) find in your neighborhood thrift store.

We had readers submit their most beloved “strange” records, and Otis and I dutifully sifted through them for gems. Along the way, the original record label dropped the project, and we convinced another label to pick it up. Eventually, THEY dropped the ball, as well, and Otis and I were left holding the ball.

When I decided to sell the magazine in February, 2003, we decided to make the compilation a freebie “Farewell Gift” from me to the subscribers. Over 26,000 people downloaded it back then, and it was permanently taken offline in mid-2003.

Listening to it again brings back happy memories. Many of the records come directly from Otis’ or my personal collections, with many others coming from hip subscriber pals (The Underground Culture Vulture, Bill Verkuilen, Jessica Ford Cameron, Dennis Flannigan, Lee Joseph, Rob Crow, Otis Records, Frits Jonker, Barry Saranchuk, and Pea Hix). We decided to leave in the odd “pop or click” from the original vinyl, and even added some needle drops, for authenticity.

I’m really proud of the compilation. A lot of heart and soul went into selecting these particular records.

Hope you enjoy it!”

Aaron Carl – Electrevival (Free Album!)

picture-5

Aaron-Carl – Producer, Remixer, Singer/Songwriter, DJ…
It is a task Aaron-Carl has done consistently since 1996.  As one of Detroit’s most in-demand producers & sought-after remixers, his signature sound crosses genres — from soulful, gospel-infused House, to the dirtiest ghettotech anthems.

Armed with little more than a cheap keyboard & a four-track cassette tape recorder, Aaron-Carl proved early on that he could hold his own in Detroit’s Electronic Music Scene.  When a demo tape landed into the hands of Underground Resistance’s “Mad” Mike Banks, Aaron was quickly signed to Banks’ Soul City record label.  Even then, Aaron refused to be boxed into one genre.  His first two records were released at the same time:  “Crucified,” a soulful deep house vocal, and “Wash It,” a cheeky underground club banger.  While both records received great critical acclaim, it was “Down” (an explicit electro-house track on the B-side of “Wash It”) that became — and remains one of Aaron’s biggest records to date.

Cementing his powerhouse status in Detroit Electronic Music, Aaron-Carl has remixed some of the Motor City’s biggest artists, like Underground Resistance, SCAN 7, Kelli Hand & AUX 88. He has also remixed International artists like Chicago House legend Dajae, Icelandic techno stars Gus Gus, and African jazz great Manu Dibango, to name a few.  Aaron’s productions have graced various labels throughout the world, including Subject Detroit, Metroplex, Kompakt, Sirkus and Universal France.  He has also been remixed by some of the industry’s top producers, like Ewan Pearson, Doc Martin and Grammy award winner Peter Rauhofer (Club 69).

Two weeks ago Aaron-Carl wrote a facebook note saying he was ready to leave the music industry due to some distribution issues. I’m sure such a creative force can’t be stopped, and hopefully we’ll see him appear again in the near future.

In the meantime, Electrevival is online and free to download

DJHHD – Further Hallucinations Ov LSDisco

lsd_mix

This mix took a long time to complete & is in the style of MILF WEED & part of the Drug Session mixes as volume 2: LSDisco.
It’s a small tribute to Albert Hoffmann (who died at 102 last week, RIP) & the acid generation.

It’s a challenging bombardment of disembodied voices over ambient music, taken from the acid generation of the 50’s & 60’s. Starting off with Albert’s Bicycle Ride, an audio representation of his accidental ingestion of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, we hear the sound of him peddling his bike towards the very first LSD psychedelic trip. Sounding like the bastard offspring of the KLF & the Orb, they are ambient & sound representations of what it might be like tripping.

Later in the mix we hear from Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, students involved in the laboratory tests & various authoritative voice overs appropriated from that era. A Paranoid Bad Trip gets captured by the CIA; the Hallucination Generation goes into Hippie Revolt & a classroom of high school students show No Fear discussing taking LSD & those freaky chromosomes. Colors become complete in a Monogramatic World. American Military troops (normal soldiers) loose control & laugh senseless into Alice Trenton’s long trip into Acidland.

Like a LSD trip itself these “sound painting” sections seemed to want to wonder off in their own direction but I present to you a loose (rough) mix of LSD samples, appropriated from various DVD’s & you tubes. There was plenty that could have gone into the mix & you may notice that I did not include many of the staple acts, The Stones, The Beatles (no Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) although Pink Floyd was heavily represented.

A big thank you to Celebrity Murder Party (CMP) for his collaboration on this mix. King Megatrip for sample contributions & Strictly Kev for his friendship & support.

Anders Ilar – Twilight Rainfalls (Free Album!)
January 27, 2009, 4:09 am

732557101_l

Released on 23rd of December 2008 to celebrate the new solar year. The 8 new tracks on Twilight Rainfalls are based upon a meditative piano session recorded on October 19th 2008 in Ludvika. The recordings was later cut into parts and used as source material for the tracks. The initial idea was to make a very quiet ambient album with only some 808 rhythms to compliment the piano, however after the first track was finished (in light we trust) I realized that this would not be the case. The rest of the tracks was put together in the following weeks. The 9th track (althea) was produced some years ago using the sound of the very same piano.

As times are becoming rougher for many labels and distroes I realized it would be a long time waiting for a CD or vinyl deal for this material. And with things being as they are I believe the best way to spread these vibrations is in free digital format. So realizing this work might disappoint a few of my listeners, at least now you know the story behind the music and its intention is simply to be what it is (music), while hopefully inspire the listener to raise the frequency of love on this planet.
