RIP Tony D – Tribute Mix

I was saddened to learn today that one of my fave beat conductors, Tony D, has passed away in a car crash. The excellent blog Original Underground Hip Hop have posted a tribute mix by DJ Books of the best cuts by Poor Righteous Teachers – an awesome (and underrated) crew that Tony produced many beats for. Here’s the report and mix for you.

Hip-hop producer Tony D has been killed in a car accident in New Jersey.
The star, real name Anthony Depula, reportedly lost control of his Jeep and mounted a pavement before flipping over on the evening of April 4.
The 42-year-old sustained serious neck injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Tony was instrumental in crafting The Poor Righteous Teachers first two albums. Also, he was/is well known in the industry for his production and early use of sampling. Tony D was one of the first artists signed to Mark Rae’s independent label Grand Central Records. He produced tracks for acts including The Outsidaz, Young Zee, King Sun and Pace Won.

As a honor to Tony D we’ll be reposting The Best Of Poor Righteous Teachers by DJ Books.” – OUHH
